so shamis, take my link example of Hillary and Edwards both employing their religious faith in helping them get thru life's trials. would you vote for someone who blantantly tells you faith plays an important part of who they are?

if not, then who do we vote for in 2008? Almost every major candidate on both sides will tell you they believe in the Christian God. They may differ in how they apply this faith, but faith is faith nonetheless , and if people like rockman and saxman tell us this is all foolishness...what is one to do? I am beside myself and need leadership on this issue.

believe in yourself piggie, everything else is irrelevant. Once you can do that, then you can just vote your conscious.

believe in self? but rhunt..that takes...dare I say it...."faith".

what are these foreign concepts you throw out? please explain to me how I can scientifically verify, and therefore trust , "faith in self"...as a plausible answer to my quandry.

I say it comes down to being pragmatic. If they don't say they have faith they have 0% chance of being elected. I don't think anyone would get elected if they were 100% honest. Look at Gatewood. Of course, one could argue that an honest person could possibly influence the world in a way other than being president. I don't see an openly atheist person getting elected president for at least another 50 years, if not longer. I think the country would vote in a gay black Jewish woman over an atheist.

so you are saying they are all liars, and none of the liberal candidates are truly people of faith? wow, that's cynical, even for piglet.

They have to say they believe in a God. I think I've seen a poll that shows that nearly 95% of the population would not vote for an atheist even if he was the best candidate in every other respect.

Politicians have to lie about religion. Or do you really think that there are less then 5 atheists/agnostics in congress???

Most people just invent some level of mysticism, and claim they believe in god even if its not a formal religion. Theists like to say Einstein believed in god, when all he really ever believed was that the universe was amazing in its complexity.

hey man, I have always thought that being an agnostic was the most tenable position a person could take. atheism and religious faith leave way to much to chance.

but read the link..both edwards and clinton went beyond saying they believe in God..they went for "my faith plays an important role" in my everyday life BS....seems to "keep it real" they could not fall too far down the rabbit hole.

Are you agnostic with respect to the existence of unicorns?

lol.....what is a unicorn?

here is my reasoning, tell me where it falls off.

atheists say "there is no god". in order to "prove" this beyond merely being a theory, a person would have to know every single thing about the universe. if a person knew everything about the universe, they would then, by default, be god.

without knowing every single thing there is to know, then the possibility that god might exist has to be left open.
