caribe, you are mixing metaphors on us...civil union and marriage are not one and the same, and my undersdtanding that is even within the gay community there is not widespread consensus on wanting to join the "straight" world in their version of marriage.

shamis has it right...civil unions sanctioned and recognized by the state should be the only legal standing...and should be available to all.

marriage is a religious ceremony/sacrament, and should have no part of federal rulings. each religion should get to dictate what unions it wants to recognize. if we want to keep the church out of our government, we have to keep the gov't out of the churches.

btw, when MLK marched he evoked non violent protest AND the name of God...is history being re-written to forget about the religious bent the civil rights folks had? or were they just all loonies?

Civil unions for all. Let the church have their marriages.
They have to be involved due to legal arrangements, since religion has very few timely repercussions for non-allow actions.

now mrs. Clinton is a looney, as she says 'faith" got her thru. yo saxman, what's up with these libs and their crazy faith statments. didn't shamis just say that people of faith and logical thought don't co-exist? hopefully Obama is better at distancing himself from this religious nutjob.

these are great ideas folks, civil unions for all with marriage being the religious bond it was intended to be- that way my dog can civil union with our minivan- denying a civil union to any law abiding adults is wrong-it basically boils down to rights over money and personal issues that the adherents of the civil union should have control over... its called freedom and it costs a buck o five

Shamis and caribe, I totally agree that the marriage institution in our country should be change and reformed yet its pretty unlikely anytime soon. Piggie has it right, many gay people are not in a hurry to be a part of the 50% divorce rate of our beloved sacred marriage institution in this country. Many people including myself would be fine with civil unions.

Hey Piggie, not that I support Edwards yet I am pretty sure he is all for civil unions.

I say many many many straight people should not be married...MANY...let alone have children.

Piggy, I too agree with Shamis. My message had two different items that were package as the same thing.

Piggy, there was religion on both sides of the argument. MLK did not do it alone. There were a bunch of liberals and some conservatives that helped shape what we now call freedom in American for the good of all.

There is definitely a way to be religious and logical: Rethink all aspects of your life and your life's problems, just don't apply logic to or think too hard about your religion and one can easily maintain the dissonance.

Its amazing how many intelligent people live the dual lifestyle. I watch my family do it. Highly educated people who employ skepticism, logic, and reason everywhere else in their life except religion...where they blindly follow...
