Belayed by a much lighter climber

Post by ReachHigh »

If your being belayed by a much lighter climber would it be better to connect them to an tree or other anchor by the belay loop where the force of the catch would be more directly supported by the anchor or by the haul loop allowing the belayer to better face the climber. This is in situations where the belayer is 50-75lbs lighter then the climber.

I disagree - I think you just shouldn't belay someone who is that much heavier than you.

Just let them belay. Its always fun passing your belayer on the way down...especially when you hit the ground and look up to see them screaming...

Yasi - That's it?!?! Maybe you should update everyone on the stitches you got this weekend as a result of belaying a heavier climber?!?!

I've already passed this person being belayed on top rope when I fell on to a couple of feet of slack.

As a heavier climber I often get belayed by people 40-50 pounds less than me. I rarely have had a problem, every once in a while I will swing hard into my belayer, but I always get a soft catch. I don't think there is any need to tie them down, just tell them not to jump when you fall, they will get a nice ride to the first bolt. Def makes you think twice on a route with a really tough 3rd or 4th clip.

But much heavier than 50- 60 pounds, hmmm, so whats this story about stitches?

90 pounds seems to be too much. Yasmeen needs to fatten up.

I'll take some pics during tonight's Cleansing of the Wound ceremony. ;)

I can't imagine that being anchored while lead belaying a much heavier climber would do anything but wrench the belayer's spine.
