Last October I was on a drug called amioadrone prior to and after heart surgery. The drug was being used "off label". I took it to mean that in my case it was not being used for its approved purpose but for one that the doctors felt and had some empirical evidence of that it "might" be effective. This particular drug can be very effective but has big time and potentially deadly side efects in some people. I eventually asked to be taken of the drug due to the fact that I ended up back in the hospital with a lot of problems that I felt were related to the drug. At the time I felt it was woth the risk although I was very afraid of the drug. Best advice - do not get sick. Having said that I have always felt my Doctor has done the best he can and is forthright and honest. He is probably as frustrated as most of us with the current system - so far he has kept me vertical.
