What is the scoop with this feature? Can we see other peoples notes on routes or is this just for each individual user. I assume that this is result of the thread on bad clips / falls.....

...but if there's a dangerous situation on a route, and somebody decks and dies going for the clip, then how can they make a note? Unless someone notes, "saw a dead body at the base of this route, didn't try it."

LMAO! ....I was wondering about the feature myself though. I think it's a cool idea if you can look at other people's notes/beta.

I think Jack put it in and it's a feature in progress. Not sure for what, though. Have you all noticed all the worthless info some users put in the comments? It may be to eliminate that kind of stuff.

Right now it's just a tiny little tick-list type thing. I use it to remind myself about which routes I've worked on. The idea was to get notes working in a sane way that were private, and then to make the toggable beta feature that was added to the TODO list in January.

Adding beta to routes so far is nearly as complicated as making a bulletin board. Some comments need to be moderated, or spell-checked, or deleted [especially corrections that have been corrected, duh]. That means making an edit_post.php, a moderate_post.php, a edit_who_is_a_moderator.php, etc. For private notes, all I need is edit_post.php.

I have also vaguely considered making a nifty little "search the forum about this route" type button on the route pages. That would let us use the board to talk about bad falls, beta, etc. And just have the guidebook look stuff up over here.

I think I can guarantee the following about the notes feature: all notes will be private, until you explicitly mark them otherwise. All notes (date and message) will be kept somewhere, at least as long as the board is around. Otherwise who knows what might happen to the notes. One big feature was to categorize them. Or sort them at all.

Possible things you might use them for: noting onsights. keeping track of beta. keeping a climbing journal. making a project list. making a what-aquatic-mammal-does-this-route-remind-me-of list, or whatever strikes your fancy.
