If only Dean had done this in the Southern Region with his feral dog, we might have a decent thread in the making, but this one is losing steam fast

For all those who think that Dean Potter did something wrong, that is but your opinion. By law he did nothing wrong. Now you may say he caused a little drama with the climbing of the arch, but BETTER TO CLIMB SOMETHING AND BE APART OF IT THAN TO JUST LOOK AT IT. Would you buy a car that is pure sweetness and park it in the garage and never ride it again? Even if he did, who cares if he caused a few rope grooves? It isn't yours or anyone elses. It isn't going to cause more erosion leading to death of plant life. If the rope markes were 1000 years old it would be called PART OF HISTORY.

I wish I could explain the kinds of things some people call good style and bad style. Apparently they have to be made into law for newschool tards to understand.

My grandma would say he wasn't raised right. Its bad manners to fuck up an understood, don't ask don't tell situation. With all the stupid fucking climbers out there now that do not understand style, we are forced to document a management plan and make it illegal. If not, how many people you think would be roped up for that thing this year?

So, do whatever the fuck you want, with discretion. When you exercise blatant disregard for style, and fuck up the status quo, you are a chump. Dean Potter is a chump.

Climbing in a lot of areas in the gorge were supposed to be don't ask don't tell and limited to a few climbers who had landowner permission. That never worked either. Except for a few local areas that remain "secret."

Well said, Charlie. When the public sees one person "get away" with something, they feel entitled to it, too. Dean may have been "communing with nature" or whatever else he wants to call it, but he also showed people "Hey look, you can climb Delicate Arch! It's not illegal!"

I like how his photographer is implying that it's too hard for most people to climb ("I can climb 5.11," Lynch says, "and it looked harder than that." -- from http://outside.away.com/outside/feature ... imb-2.html ). Since there are no other climbers out there who can climb harder than 5.11. Nice.

Charlie, I think this is what you were referring to......

"The thing that riles climbers most", says Dunn, "isn't that Potter climbed Delicate Arch" but, rather, that he flaunted the feat to the world, a move that embarrassed the Park Service and broke an unspoken trust that climbers had with officials to respect the intent of the law. "We all knew not to climb it, and Dean knew that, too," says Dunn. "He had to put a flag on top. It makes me want to vomit."

how 'bout a RRGCC fund raiser for this weekend's festivities? I was thinking a potter-inspired penny war.

It could work like this:

Label jars with potter-inspired route names – maybe:

busted pottery
all this of pot and potter
Uncalculated consequences
Fallen Arches
Arch Enemy

For every penny added to the jar the proposed route would receive one point. Every nickel, dime, quarter, added and that route name loses points according to the value of the coin. A dollar in the jar is 100 points.

At the end of the night the jars are counted and whichever jar has the most collected will have a new route named for it.

Just a thought – but could be fun - and raise some money for a good cause.

but wouldn't you want to reward the jar that lost the most points and thusly scored the lowest score which in some weird way actually raised the most money? confused in Waddy/Peytona the real one not the totally fake one floating around on the web
