First off…..Great Climbing Forum!!!

Here’s the scoop……my wife and I are passing through Red River early next week and have a day to spend climbing. The day may actually turn into about 3 hours cause that’s about how long it takes my forearms to pump out now days. I’m looking for a quick to locate crag that has fairly easy (5.7-5.9) sport or top rope routes. A little off the road is better of course. Climbing next to traffic always seemed weird.

I’m not asking for someone to tell me about their uber secret stash. I wouldn’t tell me about that either. Just looking for a cool spot to spend the afternoon on the way home from a paddling trip south. On a side note…..does there happen to be any worthy microbrew in the area?

Any info or direction will be greatly appreciated.

roadside, look it up on the online guide, its perfect for the middle of the week, way too busy on a weekend though

I agree on the Roadside... other than that, you could go to Left Flank. As far as microbrews go, if you go through Louisville on your way home you will find Cumberland Brews, which is excellent. There'll be a bunch of paddlers there too, so it will feel homey.

pick up some kentucky ale or kentucky bourbon beer.

not exactly a microbrewery because it's owned/opperated by Alltech but they make some really good beer, and it is locally in Lexington. www.kentuckyale.com

as for crags, either roadside, but i think you should go to muir valley.

Thanks for the suggestions, they all look like they will work perfectly for the time we have. Good routes and easy to get to.

Maybe some of the suggested ale or beer will make it back north to share with friends.

It worked out perfectly.

What a great area to hang out for a bit!!!

I followed everyones good advice and it made for great visit.

We came into town on Monday afternoon, scouted Roadside and found a place to camp. Tuesday morning we did breadfast at Red River....good grub and nice people!! We packed up camp and headed for Roadside were it was standing room only. We were a little disappointed at the crowd and everything in the 5.8-5.9 range was roped, if they were climbing or not. No worries, we met some nice and very funny french Canadians on our hike. Since it wasn't much of an approach and we wanted some doable routes we hiked back down and headed for Muir Valley.

If I would have known what a beautiful place this was it would have been first on the list rather than a backup. We used up out time on the last day of our vacation and the last day of good weather.

Thanks for all the good info. Next time we'll make a point of staying longer.
