its kinda funny but gets scary when they start saying
Starr, joined by the Bush administration, also asked the court to adopt a broad rule that could essentially give public schools the right to clamp down on any speech with which they disagree

Heard about this on NPR. I'm torn. We have free speech here, shouldn't the student have it on a public sidewalk. However, if it was my kid he'd be in major trouble with me.
because freedom of speech isn't this cut and dried thing some folks like to think..it is balanced with responsible speech. you know all the old cliches...you can't yell fire in a crowded building, you can't threaten to kill the President, and apparently you can't toke for the Lord....
Children in public schools should not have the same rights as adults, however when you start limiting what beliefs they can express you begin to enter a scary scary world. Especially when it comes down to "any speech with which they disagree". Imagine the poor kids in Kansas.

Well it is a debate, a debate in the supreme court, and that really sucks. So, adolescents should not have the right to say what they want near a public school, especially if it promotes the use of drugs and hinders the educational process for other children. Free speech should be limited when it disagrees with the mission of the institution.
