Cheap Ropes!

Post by Artsay »

Lanex makes a good rope; Not too hard, not too soft. And a 70 meter rope for under $100 pretty much can't be beat! http://www.acmeclimbing.com/

There are other good deals here too...

AND it's a 9.8mm to top it off! :D You gotta love skinny ropes!

I'm climbing on a 10.5mm Altea (bought from acme, also) in the 60m variety and (Sik can attest to this) it's very supple and flows very well. The % elongation is a little high (or, maybe it's just my fat a$$ ), but overall, for the money I'm pleased and, if the rope holds up well over time, I will be going for the 70m 9.8 version in the future.

Do they also have rocket-powered roller skates? And what about the portable hole - one of those would be handy!

Yeah, the Lanex ropes are good. I was skeptical until I had a chance to climb on Corey's, but I am definitely going to pick up the 9.8 as my next rope.

Very interesting....

Here's their web site: http://www.lanex.cz/en/lana/

They're a Czech-based company, which may explain why they're so cheap. The Czech Republic isn't exactly Slovenia, but they do know a fair amount about climbing. They say they have ISO 9001 (manufacturing quality control), CE (European Union) and UIAA (International Union of Alpine Associations) certification for all of the models I looked at. They seem to have lots of the bells and whistles that other rope companies have (including the cool system of adding a colored strand to the core to tell what year the rope was manufactured - hmmm, how old is my current rope anyway?)

At some point I need to compare their elongation % to other mfrs. More elongation means a softer catch (good for trad) but more you have to re-climb and the closer your ankles get to that ledge down there.....

I'd love to have R&I or Climbing do a review of them before I pick one up.

One of the mags did a review of skinny ropes in an issue not too long ago and Lanex and Ocun rated just as well as anything. I actually have it and will look when I go home tonight. I will say this about Acme climbing though: There have been a LOT of negative posts on Rockclimbing.com about them taking a LONG time to ship your order or sometimes screwing it up and then they don't answer your phone calls or emails. The products they sell are good, but their customer service might suck. I don't have any direct experience with them though, so this is just word of mouth.

Well, Acme DID mess up my order, forgetting to send the rope bag, but, other than the wierd hours they keep (10a-6p PST), I had no problems contacting someone on the phone (I did call right around 10a, though, so maybe that was a factor). I talked to Acme early Tuesday about the bag and was told it would be shipped THAT DAY and I would receive a UPS confirmation email. I got no email and called them a week later to find out the bag was shipped 3 days after I talked to Acme (tues ship Fri) and it arrived a week later. So, my reccomendation to anyone ordering through acme would be this. If you are placing a relatively small, or simple order, go ahead and use the website. If you're order contains multiple items of varying nature, call them to place the order and make SURE they are clear on everything being ordered and it is ALL in stock.
