Joint pain from typing?

Post by Dhaulagiri »

I know there are a lot of computer geeks that climb so I was hoping that someone would have some advice for my problem. Lately I have been experiencing general throbbing in my finger joints and some sharp pain when I flex my fingers. This seems to worsen at the end of my day at work where I spend the whole day typing feverishly.

The perplexing thing is that I haven been taking time off from climbing lately due to an elbow problem so I thought this would be a good time for my tendons to heal. It seems weird that even though I am not climbing at all my fingers are actually getting worse? I should also note that I am "only" 23, but could years of abuse from climbing be catching up to me already or am I maybe doing something wrong while sitting at my keyboard?

Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

my friend's a masseuse, and she recommends climbers take some kind of joint supplement if they climb a whole bunch. if you want, i'll get the name of it for you. i don't remmy what it's called bec i don't normally take supplements etc.

What kind of pain is it, can you describe it? Where exactly is it?
Ticking is gym climbing outdoors.

I have the same problem with my clicking fingers because I click my mouse seemingly 10,000 times a day.

Take a break every hour and stretch your hands and all fingers both up and down. Get a more ergonomic keyboard (and wrist pad).

It varies. If I bend and straighten my fingers it is a sharp pain. There is also some sense of a warm tingling feeling as well. As someone else has noted, this is more in my pointer finger and middle fingers. There is also some dull pain/warmness at the joint where my fingers connect to my hands.

I have recurring tendon injuries in both of my ring fingers but they don't seem as affected.

A few years back when I was having tendon issues I took this but was probably the wrong thing for a tendon problem. Maybe I will try taking some now. I do know that I ingest way too much sodium and almost 0 milk so I am going to try and switch up a few things and see how they feel.

I'll see what I can get done here at work. About 3 months ago I got a new wireless mouse and keyboard set which I love but could perhaps be changing the way I type in a bad way. I have everything I do on keyboard or mouse shortcut and I type really fast so I am probably straining some things.
