interesting article about rescue techniques and the ongoing debate about who should pay for a rescue.

just out of curiosity - if i severely injure myself at the gorge, who pays for the rescuers/equipment to get me out? i always assumed that my insurance would cover it - but i hopefully the worst that'll ever happen is a sprained ankle.

Very true.

I'm not entirely sure what the situation is at the Red, but I think it's worth mentioning that in this country mountain rescue is handled almost entirely by volunteers and without any charge. The few exceptions to this would be a handful of National Parks, such as Yosemite, that have paid rangers performing SAR duties.

Although there is no charge for SAR by an MRA team (www.mra.org), you can and probably will be billed for ambulance transport, just like any type of accident.

When they were talking about the search and rescue they mentioned the use of military to do some of the rescue/recovery. ABC news reported that they don't charge anybody for their work, because they use the time for training purposes. But for the volunteers, I don't know.
