interesting article about rescue techniques and the ongoing debate about who should pay for a rescue.

Rescues
just out of curiosity - if i severely injure myself at the gorge, who pays for the rescuers/equipment to get me out? i always assumed that my insurance would cover it - but i hopefully the worst that'll ever happen is a sprained ankle.

I'm not entirely sure what the situation is at the Red, but I think it's worth mentioning that in this country mountain rescue is handled almost entirely by volunteers and without any charge. The few exceptions to this would be a handful of National Parks, such as Yosemite, that have paid rangers performing SAR duties.
Although there is no charge for SAR by an MRA team (www.mra.org), you can and probably will be billed for ambulance transport, just like any type of accident.
