only a few more days!!!!

Post by Lateralus »

I take pride in my paisty whiteness. I don't like climbing in the sun much
unless it is very very very cold.

The contenders for Saturday so far: (in order of maybeness)

1 Funk Rock
2 Purple Valley
3 Sky Bridge
4 Dark Side (not exactly sure how to find it)
5 Oil Crag (not exactly sure how to find it)
6 Solar Collector (ditto)

any notable omissions?

Well, I can see the light and the end of the tunnel. Hopefully, all the extra plastic pulling this winter will pay off. Do a few sun dances for me or something-- the weather looks like it is clearing for now

I vote for Sky Bridge. It's never really crowded and the routes and steller. Not super steep, though.

This last weekend (April 12/13) some of the leftmost routes had shade around 1:00 pm and over the next hour or two the base and the rest of the routes went into the shade.

As for finding Oil Crack, it can be tough to find the right roads drive in. If you don't mind hiking a bit, you can park along the drive in to Drive By then find the old log stairs on the left side of the road (as you are facing uphill). The log stairs lead to a trail that goes up over the ridge between Drive By and the Oil Crack 'canyon'. You'll come down on the opposite side of the 'canyon' from the climbs so you'll walk along the base of the cliff to get to where the bolted routes are. As you can see from the on-line guide, there's a wide range of bolted routes there.

I didn't think Dark Side had a whole lot in that range unless "12" means 12d.

Did someone mention that there were new routes bolted at Drive-By that aren't in the online guidebook yet? If so, could you post where in relation to the current ones these new ones are, and what they are rated?

Got back last night.
The new crags we hit were Skybridge and the Zoo.
Went to Skybridge and it was hotter than hell as advertised but
still did 2 awesome routes, Jack in the something and King Me. King
Me was worth going up there just for that, then headed to the Zoo and
did some juggy cave routes. From Skybridge the arch it looked like Funkrock was definitely the place to go up in that area.
Well, it was a great trip.

Had a funny run in with a local.
We were at the nada tunnel and I let 2 people go through (not even back to back) and then I tried to go through and another car came through and met me half way. I explained that I had waited for two cars and some lady yelled. THERE AIN'T NO TURNS!, WE LIVE HERE. They then backed out and when I met them on the other side. She yelled it again, and the guy driving said. "This is our home". I said, "That's nice, buy you don't own the tunnel, traffic must go both ways." He then said, YOU GET OUTTA HERE AND DON'T COME BACK, YA HEAR. I chuckled and then did leave but I can guarantee that fine nadaian that I must return...

no doubt

We were ducking in the tunnel and quickly drove by them. Thankfully, we weren't the only ones around that they would have to hit to get away clean.

Be down for this Mem Day Weekend.

Want to check out more of the S. Region, maybe even bid on a route?
Anyone know if the National Forest campgrounds are first come, first serve? I want to camp somewhere besides Cliffview as they went from $8/night to $20/night.

hope it's not too humid down there yet

Koomers Ridge is the only thing close to Nat FS and they are leased out and run by a contractor. They have just raised their rates to $15/night single and $20 for a double.
They have showers and water, picnic tables and fire rings.
First come/first served.
Search for the thread about the new campground.
I'll try and find it and link to it.
Pretty bust right now.....
