Thanksgiving Weekend Trip Questions

Post by mjwood »

Please help. I've never been to the Red, but plan to go for Thanksgiving before leaving the East Coast. Are there certain areas that are safer than others regarding breakins? Can you drink (your own) beer at Miguel's campsite? Any other essential advice for planning the trip?

Thank you!

I wouldn't leave anything of value in my car anywhere - IMO! The break-ins, knock on wood, have ceased as of late. Have fun, and you know Miguel's is in a dry county, right???? ;)

Dry just means you can't buy it. Prohibition was repealed.

saxman is sort of right (the lawyers on here can correct me if necessary). since miguel's is a business establishment, he is prohibited from knowingly allowing open alcohol containers on his property, since he is in a dry county. hence, the aluminum wrap and nalgene tricks. now, this may be for the family atmosphere (cough, cough) of miquel's, but I just assumed it was for local laws...anyone know different?

Just cover any open containers or transfer the liquids to another container out of courtesy.

Remember to remove any foil from bottles. Miguel recycles and his employees have to remove the foil from each bottle in order to do so.

While no area in the gorge is exempt from break-ins, the southern region always seemed to be the hardest hit. Probably as the parking areas are more remote. I would think the absolutely safest areas would be Torrent Falls (don't forget to donate) or Muir Valley (donations accepted), both of which are privately owned and closely watched. Raodside and Left Flank/Military have parking lots which can get full, at least lowering the odds that your vehicle will get hit. Treat it like a day at the mall during the holidays. Don't leave anything you can't live without in your car and use common sense (don't leave things in view, etc.).

Hope you have a great time, almost all of the people are friendly and honest; there's always one bad apple no more matter where you go in life.
