Power2U, are you reading the same thread as I am? How did you get so off topic?
Who said anything about competition?
Do you think that after my years of climbing I haven't realized the obvious fact you just stated?
I'm a 5.x Climber!
I just thought of somehting-
It would depend on where you are climbing. If its clipups and non-committing routes, then I don't gather it matters. (other than 'I don't want to hang out with gumbies')
It would matter if you were in a place where runouts are common (needles, long routes) or where you are simply expected to be able to effectivly solo your grade.
That's probobly the arena where you must be well rounded, and not start up a long 5.9 where you might encounter pitch long runouts.
If if your just clippin, then its all for show.

SCIN,
The topic of this thread is about the obvious nature of climbing and what it means to us as individuals, and I know you know this. We all climb b/c we love it. We all consider ourselves well versed at whatever aspect o fthe sport that we enjoy. 88keys feels that cliping bolts is all for show, you feel that being well rounded is an important part of the sport, thats all fine... the bottom line is that we all have a different oppinion on why we climb and at what level we consider ourselves, for trad, sport, bouldering, alpine..etc. In this thread you seem to be touting that... He who is the most well rounded is the best climber and that anyone should take their weakest link and that is there level... I have done long 5.8 alpine pitches in RMNP Colorado and am not well prepared to do harder than that were long runouots and loose rock are involved so that means that I am a 5.8 climber to you... why do I care about how you think I should classify myself This thread is telling me that I am not a 5.12 climber, and I have worked long and hard to get where I am and damn it that is what I want to consider myself. Just as you have worked long and hard to get where you are. I have a good friend... The guy who did Boogered... and he is a crack climbing machine but not much into sport climbing so are his accomplishments in trad lessened by the fact that he can't climb the same level of sport routes? I don't think so... that is all my point is, and I assume the point of your question. I hope I am not too far off base here.
This thread has become a kinda of intellectual exchange... instead of name calling... I like it.

Lest we all forget... climbing is a mostly meaningless pursuit that we do for fun.

88keys, does this tick list look familiar? If its all for show then why don't you try clipping?
