Professional Guiding in Muir Valley
(Posted October 10, 2006 on redriverclimbing.com)
First off, a reminder: The owners of Muir Valley, LLC, Rick and Liz Weber, do not charge any admission fee to visitors to Muir Valley. Neither does Muir Valley, LLC have a commercial interest in any guide service that charges a fee for its services. Professional guiding in Muir Valley is permitted under the conditions listed below, but it must be understood by both guides and their clients that neither Muir Valley, LLC, nor its owners, have any commercial interest in their activities.
ONLY those guide services that have registered with and are officially recognized by the Muir Valley, LLC owners are permitted to guide in the Valley. As of this writing, they include True North Outfitters, Red River Outdoors, Appalachian Climbing School (Jim Taylor), Desert Ice Mountain Guides (Craig Luebben), Arno Ilgner, and Torrent Falls.
Rules:
1. Preferably, guides will be certified by the American Mountain Guide Association with at least a Top Rope Site Management rating (TRSM). If not certified, guides must either a. be working toward their TRSM certification and be checked out by a TRSM guide or b. have at least two years experience in top rope guiding and must be able to demonstrate their top rope site management skills. Contact Rick Weber for details.
2. Guides are required to have guide insurance and to list Muir Valley, LLC and its owners as named insureds on their liability policies.
3. Guides must follow all guidelines set forth by the AMGA relevant to the rock guiding they will be doing in Muir Valley. This includes use of helmets by both guides and clients and proper TR site management.
4. Guides are required to verify that each of their clients has submitted an on-line release form for Muir Valley (found at http://www.muirvalley.com)
5. Guides must share clifflines with other climbers – especially the more popular moderate venues, such as the Practice Wall and Bruise Brothers’ Wall. If the guide is not using a top rope that he/she set up on a particular route, and others are waiting to climb that route, the guide must either pull the rope or allow others to use it.
6. Guides and their clients are required, as are all MV visitors, to follow the Rules and Guidelines for climbing in Muir Valley posted on the Kiosk in the main parking lot and on the Muir Valley website.
