I don't really have a problem with it. I have actually had this happen at least 10 times. It has never been a problem. Usually at Torrent or roadside where people know that they can find a catch. As long as someone asks and doesn't assume, I have no problem giving them some belays, as long as they have their gear to use.
If I couldn't line up a partner for a day I wanted to get out, I would def head out to one of the popular crags and hope to run into someone I know. If I didn't, I would ask someone there if I could trade some belays with them.
As long as the person brings gear, and asks I don't see what the problem is. Remember you can always say no.

I agree with most of the replies. I like to meet new people and as long as someone has their own harness, shoes, chalk etc...I don't mind helping them out with a belay. I travel out of town to climb most of the time and sometimes do not have anyone to climb with on a particular day when I am there for several days (e.g., at the Red or Smith Rocks). If I am going to do this, I do try to observe first and see which climbers seem to be more amenable to letting me work in. I always offer up my rope/draws.
Most climbers learn to climb thanks to the kindness of more advanced climbers--who wouldn't want to pass on that tradition? .......

That having been said, if someone assumes, or wants to borrow all your gear and tries to climb way above his/her limit with no consideration for the helpers, then that person is the a-hole.

Hauling a big ego up a route adds at least a full grade.
call me a-hole then..stay off my freakin rope, don't plop your unleashed dog anywhere near me, spray your garden not other climbers, always rap off fixed gear instead of being lowered and for gawd's sake, save smoking for after sex.
and don't bitch about bolting until you've put in some sweat equity to make the world a better place.
now, if you still want to bum a belay you mooch, at least have fashion sense to not wear blue jeans or yojimbo's to the crag. and if you have a tramp stamp or butterfly in the small of your back, or a woven thorn symbol tattoed on your bicep, then have the good sense to not have your fat ass or beer gut exposed to the public....then, maybe then, we can talk about a ride on my cord.
if all this doesn't deter you from assuming we are old buddies and I owe you a catch, how about offering to make a donation to the coalition in exchange for some air time?
