JB, Cadillac Desert is really good, although depressing.....
discojett - that is one of the funniest books of all time.... I love the one about Easter..... I feel like I talk about that short story way too much.....

Just finished Tom Franklin's Smonk. A wonderful pastoral set near the Gulf coast in the early twentieth century. Filled with humorous nuances, murder, incest, and insanity. It reminded me somewhat of Blood Meridian, but not as skilled or as effective. He's got a book of stories called Poachers that I thought was better than Smonk.
I just started Jessie Weston's From Ritual to Romance. The Romance thingy she is referring to is the story about the search for the Holy Grail. She explores the origins of that and other King Arthur legends. Formally thought to be Christian in origin, she brings up the possible connection with fertility cults that pre-date Christianity by a thousand years or so. That's the ritual part of the title. I believe her final conclusion is that Christianity is descendant from those cults. Pagan bitch.
I think she found some inspiration in Frazer's Golden Bough, although I don't have a clue as to what his book is about. I might follow up Weston's book with Eliot's Wasteland. Although I dislike poetry, I might actually be able to understand it.

I've been reading mostly comics and horror movie magazines. I just recently found out that you can still subscibe to Famous Monsters of Filmland, that's a great mag. I've almost finished Domain by Steve Alten. It's the first book in a 3 part set that includes Resurrection. If you're unfamialar with Alten's work, he writes Science-Fiction that's based on fact and he puts an incredible amount of research into his books. Domain is one of the most interesting and well written books I've ever read.
