climbing trip suggestions

Post by chriss »

I am planning on taking a climbing trip in mid-December. We are thinking about going to Utah or Arizona ( I have never been climbing in either state). We are looking for sport climbing and multi-pitch trad.

I know that there are some well travelled climbers here. What are your suggestions. Best places to climb, where to fly into. I appreciate any suugestions.

Thanks,
Chris

Though not in Utah or AZ red rocks has exactly what you want though and is often in season in Dec.

st george in UT has the sport climbing and is close to zion for some multi-pitch.

AZ is trickier. mt. lemon has good sport climbing but is cold in the winter but cochise has really good multi-pitch trad but no sport. Alternatively you might go to flagstaff for some mediocre sport climbing and then down to sedona for some desert trad.

REally though redrocks is what you want.

um...indian creek has niether sport climbing or multi-pitch trad, but it is a lot of fun.

You can sort of get in what you are looking for in moab area. mill creek for sport, and desert towers for multi-pitch trad routes.

Thanks for the suggestions merrick. We went to Red rocks last year at that time, we are actually using a free ticket we got from being bumped from our plane. Maybe going back to Red Rocks wouldn't be a bad thing, but I would like to see some new areas. Keep the suggestions coming.

portrero would be a possibility if you trade multi-pitch trad for multi-pitch sport. it is really really fun and cheap down there.

if your ticket is limited to the us fly into laredo or austin and take a bus the rest of the way.

oddly, what you are looking for is kind of rare. There are not too many areas that I have been to that have both good sport climbing and good multi-pitch trad.
