Yes, it really does save anchor wear. But assuming dangerous anchors are replaced, the only people who really benefit from less anchor wear are the ones who are replacing them. I think its safe to say most sport climbers would rather buy new anchors than rap off of every climb...or at least let somebody else buy them.

Your weight and bits of sand on the rope are like a grinding wheel on steel. It wears right through eventually.
