Anyone going to the ESRI conference, San Diego 2nd week Aug.

Post by green_up »

I'm going to S.D. CA from the 7th-11th of August for the annual ESRI user's conference. Anyone want to hook-up and hit the gym a couple nights?

I see a couple gyms, Vertical Hold: http://www.verticalhold.com/flash/index.html

and Solid Rock gym: http://www.solidrockgym.com/

Though neither have the greatest website.

I'm flying in for a conference in San Diego Aug. 2nd-5th. Sucks we'll miss each other, I was looking for someone to meet up with and do some climbing with. Is there any bouldering nearby if I had a rental car that you know of?

That Vertical Hold gym I've linked above looks like they have a lot of bouldering. As far as natural stuff, I have no idea how far you'd have to go.

The nice thing about the second gym listed, is it's really close to downtown and the airport. But, their website isn't very functional thereby creating a bit of a public transportation risk.

Good luck and have fun.

That conference is a blast! I can't make it this year, unfortunately. :(

You should check out Old Town San Diego one night. You can take the train there, leaving from right out in front of the Convention Center (maybe a 20-30 minute commute?) and it's really neat. You can also go to Coronado Island via the ferry that is walking distance from the Convention Center.

Have fun!

Mount Woodson. Never been there, but it is supposed to be really good. There are a crap-load of other bouldering areas listed in my dusty, 1990 Southern California Bouldering Guide by Craig Fry. Heat could be an issue - I think they're in the middle of a big heat wave down there. Bring a headlamp, boulder at night. Definitely get some books and do some climbing. Rock'n road would probably get you to several cliffs, and I bet there are stacks of bouldering guides published now.

Cool. Thanks for the advisements Artsay and Bashie. I'll definately check out the city. I'm not sure I'll have the time to get out to the countryside, but I'd sure like to. I'd probably be more inspired if I had a partner.

ESRI Conference - Do it right your first time. Hit a few lectures, then hit the Marriott pool for margaritas...every day. You can boulder by the waterfall, and the hot 40-something moms will be impressed.

Old Town is nice, head over there in the evenings.

I would take a rack and try to hit Mission Gorge it's only 5 minutes out of SD and much better than a gym. Check out Balboa Park as well as Old Town while your there.

I'm going to a different conference the week before, but I checked out Rock and Road and there are quite a few places close by to downtown. I'm definitely bringing shoes, maybe a harness if I can beg a belay from a local. Otherwise it's bouldering and soloing.
