Deer flies!

Post by chawhee »

Can anyone tell me exactly how bad the deer flies are this time of year. We're camping so just wanted to know. Not to mention the snakes.
Thanks

Deer files are still out, but fading from a couple weeks ago.
Still plenty of snakes around.

They're bad. Technically this year rates .79 on the Halpert Index, so plan accordingly.

Kentucky + Woods / Summer + (Rain X Frequent) = Bugs & Snakes

No matter where you go there will be some sort of flying critter. Check for ticks after your approach, first one up the trail should have a staff for spider webs.

Yeah, there be snakes in the woods and the crags. I haven't run across any bigguns this year, but have stayed at the more frequented crags.

Use common sense and have fun.

At Bob Marley, the snakes are really bad. I was belaying a friend on Dogleg and did not realize we were standing right over a huge copper head nest. Probaby 5-6 of em under the boulder you stand on, rougly 2 feet from your legs the copperheads are. They are real docile creatures so if you leave them be they leave you be. I was quite terrified but I just imagined I was in an episode of fear factor. haha But BEEE WAREE!
Who Me? I gotta hitch hike god damn 18 miles to get a god damn beer......that's bullshit.

I've been told by a friend that deer flies are attracted to CO2. Not sure if it's true, but he says holding your breath for 5 seconds or so will make them go away. Of course then when you start breathing again they will come back.

The only thing that works for sure is a killing freeze.

I'm just looking forward to the fall/winter.

Sometimes, when I bring a deer with me to the crag, they will leave me alone and bug the deer. Torrent still does not have a restriction on deer.
