You've found the hole in my story, Saxman! I'm an imposter! A fake! Or perhaps I am just so at one with nature that the wind acts as my stand-in fireman's belayer when I'm the first one down on multi-pitch. The world will never know.

We're considering the Fireman's belay a backup? If so I need to change my vote...

You and my wife with your wild womanly powers with mother nature. Does mother nature invite certain individuals (women only) to tea occaisionally?

I left the middle option for that but worded it poorly.

I only backup a rapell if I know I'll be doing something awkward on the way down (like cleaning a stuck piece of gear), ane even then I usually end up just wrapping the rope around my leg. It often depends on the amount of friction in the system. Skinny new ropes require a backup for anything out of the ordinary, but old lumpy 10.5's are pretty safe to do just about anything on (depending on the device you use).
