I only backup a rapell if I know I'll be doing something awkward on the way down (like cleaning a stuck piece of gear), ane even then I usually end up just wrapping the rope around my leg. It often depends on the amount of friction in the system. Skinny new ropes require a backup for anything out of the ordinary, but old lumpy 10.5's are pretty safe to do just about anything on (depending on the device you use).
