I can't fault Mark for closing it when non paying climbers scream so much profanity that guests don't want to stay at cabins they pay for.

Of course it is Mark's land and he is free to manage it how he sees fit, but it does seem to be a poor business decision considering that many of the folks who come and eat at the Mountain BBQ are climbers. We eat there often and we usually see quite a few climbers dining there. For many it is convenient after climbing at Torrent to go next door for some fine food.

I'll still eat there, however I've also heard from several climbers that they will no longer be going there if the cliff is closed... Evidentally the business from climbers isn't that important or it doesn't have a significant economic impact.

If Mark closes the cliff, it will indeed be a sad day at the Red. Has anyone else noticed the closure? There may still be time to save it.

clarifying my earlier statement, I said they said maybe, and that it looked like it, but, they did not say it was for sure. I felt I should clarify that before I am the source of the closure rumor that seems to be starting. I also got the feel from him it will pain him to do this, but he's been put in the corner and has nowhere else to go. Nicole told me that he is having a bad time over this whole decision,
he feels like the line in the sand has been drawn and now reguardless of the outcome he has to stand his ground. The climbing has always been free, very few knew about the donation kiosk and even less put anything in it, so I don't really think this is a money driven issue. Who is Mark going to get to make up all the lost revenue from the donation box, oh that's right, no one puts anything in it.
The donation box was a courtesy to show the land owner respect, obviously there is'nt enough respect. I have never climbed Torrent, I did pay for a guide to rappell the water fall, and I have climbed the Via Ferrata several times, so I don't know what were losing, but for those of you who have done the right things, your loss will be greater than those who have ruined it........ I hope it works out for all of us, but I don't think it looks good at this time......

Even if climbing at Torrent is closed to those that aren't renting a cabin, I'll still eat at the BBQ. Noone is going to keep my away from those pulled pork sandwiches and ribs and steaks....mmmmmm.... I'm hungry.

again, i think we're preaching to the choir. it's not the people that read these forums that are the issue....

i wonder, what kind of signage would go up? Torrent is "open" in the guidebooks and, evidently, people don't read the kiosk as it is. I wonder how many people would know, other than word of mouth, that it is closed. especially if climbers rent a cabin and climb, i wonder how many people would drive by and think, "it's open!"
