University groups do truly need to check with the Forest Service about whether their activity requires a Special Use Permit. Here is the link to the USFS information for permits: http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/passes/specialuse.shtml
People on this bbs might want to keep in mind that it is monitored by the USFS. Please respect all Forest Service rules and guidelines. Thank you.

so paul, just call rick and take em to muir....

screw all the chumps, and stay within the rules too.....cause we gotta have the rules. your gumby group would ruin it for the rest of us pros. see y'all at the lode soon, stick clip, lawn chair, and posse in tow.

(we were 15-20 deep around 8 ball on sunday. anyone calling foul over that?)

btw, the lode is a pit from hell.
Positive vibes brah...positive vibes.

thanks again for the info about the permits. the organizers didin't know and neither did i. from the sound of it, it seems the universities might fall into a bit of a grey area. regardless, i'm going to contact some people there (anyone know emails?) and see if we need to do anything for this.

Probably would have been better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission on this one. :)

Ignorance is bliss! And it can help facilitate things as well.

Personally, I really appreciate Paul giving everybody a heads up on his group. It's a moderately long approach and a crag I frequently take new climbers to (for a lot of the same reasons this group is going there)....I'm much happier getting a heads up than hiking all the way up there and then finding a big group. Sounds like this group was coming with or without Paul - and we'll all be better off with him accompanying them.

word on the street:

the program director has contacted people about running trips in the dbnf (global village and such) and they've told him that as long as they're under 75 people they don't need the permit. he said the web site told him the same as what the people he talked to told him on the phone: less than 75, didn't need a permit. maybe there's confusion in the dbnf offices.. i'll look into it some more but it sounds like we're in compliance with respect to permits and access..

this isn't the heart of the thread but i thought i'd give people an update.

and if you're still planning on heading out there, know that you're first in line always. if you want me to string anything up for you or belay you on something, i'd be happy to.

thanks again to all the people who have offered their support and help with breaking the group up. i might take you up on that sometime soon if things can work out with that. and i appreciate all the feedback, positive and negative. helps me learn, even if it's learning how to expand my patience.

Paul, thank you for not taking a group of 74 people to Global Village!
