George W. Bush and the climbing community
Gulliver,
Bushwacker actually jumped on me and stated I should go see Black Hawk Down to get my facts straight, and I responded with the statement about the movies and CNN, and my personal experiences with the Military at the time of this tragedy.
I used the word slander because it is what it is, but the sentiment behind it was what I actually agree with, call it rhetoric or propaganda, it's all the same. I found this next pasting on the Washington Post website, see what you think.
3. Did Clinton cave in after the raid and sell out the Rangers?
"There's no doubt that the perception people have of this episode is that it was a total fiasco. But this was a successfully completed mission. … The failure was Clinton's decision to pull out the day after this happened. The truth is he lacked the kind of moral personal force that it took to persuade Congress and the American people that even though this is not popular, we have to do it."—Bowden, in an interview with Elizabeth Snead, reporting for the Washington Post
A few days after the Rangers' deaths and the humiliating CNN coverage, Clinton did completely reverse course. He announced it had been a mistake to "personalize the conflict." He sent in more firepower, but only to cover a U.S. withdrawal. Nation-building was over. The key anti-Aideed Clinton official was removed from his post, and Oakley was sent back in to negotiate. Within weeks, Oakley was flying Aideed to a peace conference on a U.S. plane.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.....
if we're stuck in Somalia, I recall Bush 1 sent the Marines in... they were relieved by the Rangers, Clinton stole the election thanks to Perot, Rangers sought additional assets, armor, air etc. Clinton refused, Rangers went in in the afternoon, rest is documented for challenged. side note... casualties included Army aviators, Delta Team members, Navy Seals and Air Force pararescue.
Crankmas says....
Clinton refused, Rangers went in in the afternoon
You are correct, they went in when he refused the Armor and AC-130 gunships for aircover, but then he stepped up the time table to a daylight raid.
Somewhere a few threads back someone said something about presidents who don't serve eagerly sending troops to they're deaths hmm......

I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
