I personally was hooked on reds by shiraz, which to me seems not as bitter as a lot of other reds. probably stay away from the chianti's at first, my current fav, but not very sweet.
you might also try transitioning with a blush or something. even try drinking some more whites once in a while. you might have to build up your liking for wine in general before going for the reds. chardonnay was the first wine i ever liked. maybe something 3-4 years old. but try not to buy anything too expensive at first, feeling you wasted a bunch of money on a bottle of wine you dislike is a bad way to go. once you find a wine you like, it'll be alot easier to like others.
side note, I have no idea if you have any of these near you, but there's a store near me called trader joes, they have really discounted wines, as well as many other products(i think a lot of the wines are around half price) once i found that place i got totally hooked, as i could sample lots of good wines w/o having to break the bank.

Overhung, check some of the local wineries. Chrisman Mill in Jessamin County, and Talon in Lexington have some really yummy wines. They offer tasting. I prefer a blush, but the cardiac benefits are in the red wine.
If I drink red, I like a Cabernet Sauvignon. Not real sweet, but tasty.

What I love about running is you can meditate while running. It's a peaceful place.
