French Bordeaux’s are the smoothest as far as red wines go. They are even a little cheaper now because not so many people are buying them. Italian and Spanish tend to be an acquired taste. Some California reds are good some are not. If you want a very good starter red from California try a Flora Springs cabernet. They are very good and around $20 a bottle.

Red Wine
Reds are good, waaaay better than white IMHO. You just have to taste them and learn whatch like and don't like. Like others have said, try them with food (and forget those silly white / red food rules). Just swing by your local Liquor Barn wine store and check out the reds under 10 $. You can get a darn good bottle of wine for 7 to 12 bucks, don't worry about pricey stuff until you find something you like. Start with Merlot, that is a fairly painless red that most people like. But definately get into the cabs, shiraz, chianti, and blends. They are more fun. I've heard that the stuff from South America is really good for you. Supposedly there are more tannins (or whatever is good for you) in reds from Chile and Argentina. I dunno if that is true, but wines from down there are pretty good. Like Wes said, the Yellow Tail label is all good. Try stuff from Autralia and the west coast of the US too!

I see they are still lopping off mountains in Eastern Kentucky. Electricity isn't cheap.
Overhung: you don't need to spend a lot of money to find a wine you like. What you need to do is try various types of red wine (wines made from different types of grapes). I drink a fair amount of wine and when I started there was only red and white, but over time I learned various things.
I imagine that the German wine you are talking about is Riesling; it's generally a desert wine and very sweet. It's a white wine and does not have the same health benefits as drinking red wine, if I'm not mistaken.
Try Beaujolais, it's a type of French wine, is generally affordable and fruity tasting. I would also suggest buying several types of wine that are manufactured by a large producer. The reason is that it’s cheap to do so and you can try a bunch of different wines of reasonable quality.
Follow Wes' and Artsay's suggestion as to the brand: Yellowtail or Rosemont. They both make a bunch of wines, they're generally pretty good and their affordable. Rosemont has a special right now where they will rebate you $3 per bottle, up to 12 bottles. You can buy their wine for $6-7 a bottle, so the net cost to you is only a couple bucks. You have to look for the rebate coupon, it’s attached to the top of some bottles, but others do not have them. You only need one rebate coupon.
Rosemont makes the following types of wine: (1) Zinfandel, (2) a blend of Grenache and Shiraz, (3) Shiraz and a (4) blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Don't let the funky names overwhelm you; they're just the name of the particular grape. That is, unless you're talking about French wine, but we won't get into that. . .
You might want to stay away from Cabernet Sauvignon; it’s a big beefy wine and is not sweet at all.

Cockatto ridge is a drinkable, cheap red.
If you're going to dring it everyday, it would be well worth your time to find a good inexpensive wine. I don't care for yellow tail, but alot of people like it. Interesting yellow tail fact: NONE of it is drank in Australia. it is exclusivly export, and only to USA.
Goats do Roam is another really good wine.
