There's a new climbing vid about New Zealand: Southern Faces. Just won it on eBay for $14.

I posted that in one of my midmorning funks rembering the wonders and joys of that beautiful place. It was my home for three years and my kids were born there. But I will tell you folks one thing, as great as the climbing is in the Red,I think the community of climbers that has grown up around it is more wonderful and special than you realize. And I've been around.

that video is ok. it is a great overview of all the climbing in New Zealand but not the sort of video you watch again and again. there are lots of pretty places in New Zealand to climb that I had never heard of.

just to make everyone jealous:
I am leaving Christmas Day for three months in NZ. The first month im traveling around w/ my parents and then I'm have two months to make my way from Christchurch back to Auckland for my flight out. i want to hit some stuff up in Christchurch (Castle Hill primarily), spend 3-4 weeks at Paynes Ford (gotta place there kinda like Miguel's) and the rest of the time climbing in the North Island around the Wharapapa area.

If anyone has contacts in Christchurch that could hook me up with a climbing person let me know.

All my old cronies now live in Duneden or Greymouth, but when you're in Christchurch go to the YMCA. It has a very good climbing gym and it used to be the main hangout, though there is a commercial gym that opened since I left that might have taken over. I think it's called the Edge?
Paynes Ford/Golden bay are way overrated but as far as full on sport climbing they are the only game in town.
Why would anybody want to go anywhere else than Castle Hill?

thanks for the info. i've been looking at the climbing at Paynes and it doesn't look like there is even a whole lot of .12 stuff there. thats ok, that means i'll be good there :) its a pretty flexible trip, if i don't like where i'm at I'll just get up and go somewhere else.

Payne's not overgraded just kind of chossy. Beautiful location though.
Go to Wanaka. Or twinstream ( deathhike to reach that place though ).
