Pilot Knob KY

Post by SCIN »

Has anyone climbed here? I was looking through Tim Toula's 2nd edition of Rock and Road and came across this comment "Possible OW horror classic in back".

I'm thinking he meant that there's a possible sick offwidth line there. If so I'd love to check it out. That sentence seemed kind of strange but that's what I read into it.

I haven't climbed there, but I have a photocopy of the old guidebook to the place written in 1979. It doesn't mention anything about an offwidth other than the area's hardest route in the guidebook which is 5.10 and starts as an offwidth, then narrows as it gets higher, but keep in mind it's a really old guide

I'm not sure it will be that helpful, but PM me and I'll scan it and email you a copy.

Dan Blocker is the name of the route. My memory says its an acute dihedral. Its really not worth going there for one route. If you were passing through the area and needed your redneck fix it would be a great place to break some beer bottles.

I've also got a photo copied guide to the area somewhere.

Tim's words made it sound like it was not an established route yet. Like an undone sick thing.

Dan Blocker was the guy who played "Hoss" on Bonanza. Thats kind of a cool name for an offwidth, even if its not the right one....

I used to live close by Piolt Knob, and my dad and I went "searching for places to climb" and it ended up being a bush-wacking ordeal the whole time, and I gave up...although I mighta' been looking in the wrong places- who knows.

I might be thinking of a different place. Is Pilot Knob near Berea?

There are at least two pilot knobs in KY. There is one near Berea with some top roping. The one off the parkway nearer clay city may have some stuff too.

There are actually quite a few Pilot Knob, Rock, Point, etc. in KY. The one Ray is talking about I think is technically Pilot Rock and is out in western KY near Ft. Campbell. You can see the Jefferson Davis Memorial to the south from the top of the rock.

The Pilot Knob in Clay City does not have climbing potential unless you like really soft and pebbly choss. It does have some decent hiking though and has nice views.

Then there is the Pilot Knob near Big Hill (Berea) but I don't know if there is public access.

Also, in the guide Dan Blocker is listed as a 5.10 I think and isn't portrayed as a project. I think you could top rope it fairly easily. Last time I was there we actually went and looked at it but it was choked with cobwebs.
