rdpoints:
I promise you her dogs have heard gun shots at the Red. Mine has, the shots frighten her, she looks up at me and I assure her it's fine. No one is shooting off a gun near her though. Artsay was bringing up an important point, which is that fireworks scare dogs. I'm certain the people who were setting off the fireworks didn't even dream they would chase off someone's animal. But now they know.
Oh and we know that you suck.
Fireworks at the Crag
First off, I have a dog.
Secondly,
I think you missed my point...
I was simply saying that there are loud noises that you can't control.....ie. the hunter example. And those said noises may happen frequently at the Red, or anywhere for that matter.....almost every time I visit the Red there are shots fired from somewhere, some loud, some not so loud. So regardless wether they were firecrackers or gun shots, your dog ran away and didn't come back.
So, if you're dogs are prone to running away--AND NOT COMING BACK--by those types of loud noises, (and yours are). Then you MIGHT want to have them on a leash.
I'm not sure why I'm an idiot for pointing that out....
Sometimes I DON'T have my dog on a leash......but if I knew that loud noises (like gunshots or firecrackers) would send him running without coming back, I would keep him leashed all the time. ESPECIALLY AT THE RED where ANYTHING can happen (like fools with firecrackers!).
Does that make more sense?
The main reason I posted initially, was because a couple people mentioned the leash thing.....and got jumped for suggesting it. (read steep4me's and defender's posts) they make great points.
Hope that clears things up.......am I still and idiot????

rdpoints - Our dog that ran away and didn't come back (she ran to the car because she's a good dog) is 6+ years old and has never ran away, is always off the leash, extremely loyal, and comes when called. She definitely is NOT "prone" to running away. However, the fireworks were set off not 10 feet from their water bowl and probably within 30 ft from them. How do you not see what I'm talking about? The world's best dog would run away. You are most definitely missing the point and I'm done trying to explain it to you.
Does he have a strange bear claw like appendage protruding from his neck? He kep petting it.
So AGAIN.....when I said "lesson learned" in my first post, I meant that; now you know your dog WILL run away after hearing a loud noise LIKE THAT. And those said loud noises are UNPREDICTABLE (ie. the firecrackers).
Is my point that hard to understand.....
Bottom line: unpredictable things happen at the crags......be prepared.
Ditto pigsteak's post above.....I'm not the only one who thinks this.
Try not to take it so personally.......it's all good.
