Sounds like you are considering having someone take pictures of you and your friend for a day.
How much is it worth to you and how much do you think is fair to pay the photographer for their time and talent?
I have an idea who you might be talking about, and if my idea is right, he is a great photographer and a really good guy.
No, sounds like he's advertising for free. Read his sig.

Not really, I suppose, but be up front about it. None of this "what would you pay for x, by the way, I offer x". Just say, anyone want a photog? $x.

Just my 2¢...

He is just doing some basic market research. I can tell him now though that its not going to pay out.

Figure 30-35$ in car/gas expenses just getting to the red from cincinnati (and thats in a car with good gas mileage).

Figure spending the whole day doing the "shoot" (2.5 hours there, 2.5 hours back, plus 4-6 hours with the customer).

Then consider your gear expenses. Wes mentions 3k (which sounds a little low for the stuff he has mentioned). I have over 10k in gear and just like wes said, its a drop in the hat to what I could be spending (this stuff gets pricey).

How much is your time worth? at this point if you charge 145$ for the shoot you only make 10$ an hour (before taxes). Around the 245$-300$ mark it starts to be worthwhile if your doing it for fun. I wouldn't do it for less than about 500-600$.

Basically, good luck. lol

Yep, the only way it seemed like it would be doable for me, would be if I was already living down there, and wanted a way to make a little extra cash on rest days.

Nope, about 3k - 1500 for 20d, 350 for the tamron, 750 for the 70-200 (BIG thanks to odub!), maybe 300 for a couple really fast 1 gig cf cards. Really, really want a 1D Mark IIn, but that is $3,800 for the body. Then, another 1K for a wide angle, then 3-4 K for a 300 2.8 (or really a 400 2.8, but those are 6k new). Oh, I really need a flash as well, so add another 400+.

You Gotta do it for your own satisfaction more than anything. I've been shooting for a years now and still haven't made a cent off of it but for some reason I still spend thousands of dollars a year on new equipmentso thatI am able to look at some photos that me and maybe a few other people are interested in. Not to mention all the F-ing jugging. Oh well I'm still hooked and can't stop. F-it I'm gonna go take some pics!

You could be doing alot worse things. I think the pics are awesome. Most of us know how hard the good ones are to get.

If anyone is looking for some good equipment, I ran across a fairly good deal here:
