Princess Arch

Last week we were at the RRG with some non-climbers, so we decided to take a rest day and do some tourist type hiking. We walked out to Princess Arch. Since I was there, I decided to scope out the climbs. I understand that you use a trail heading down from the left side of the hiking trail. My quest...

Left or Right on Pogue Ethics?

I've climbed Pogue Ethics a few times, but always a couple of years between climbs. At the bulge above the ledge (the crux in my opinion), I've always climbed up the right side, doing a bit of a layback. It makes for a long reach to clip the bolt above the bulge. Recently, talking to one of my frien...

The copperheads fequent the base of Father and Son / Ky. Pinstripe, so watch out there also. We found a little one there just four days ago. It took a bit of talking to convince some students from W. KY just to leave it alone. They were going to pick it up by the tail and move it out of the way. :s...

200 feet to climbers' right of the Washboard Wall in the Joe Ponder Hollow of Muir Valley is the Practice Wall. Here you can set up a top belay, if you wish. There are two extra sets of anchors on the ledge designed for AMGA top belaying instruction. Many beginners find it less intimidating climbin...

Tradmill is a nice climb....RRO introduced me to it. You'll definitely need directionals to avoid a big pendulum. Ditto the wierd start....especially if you're short (a subtle detail that Tackett couldn't possibly appreciate!!). Well, I'm a giant 5'7", so I shouldn't have any trouble with bein...

Thanks all. That saves me some time and bother. I was planning on going to Muir, but later in the week when we have a full day. There's some great lines there for novice climbers. I haven't looked at the practice wall, just because I didn't need it, but with these folks it could be perfect. I notice...

Princess Arch questions

Next week I'm going to be climbing with some gumbies for which easy toproping would be a blessing, at least for the first day out. Otherwise I'm going to have to play human ropegun and try to keep everyone safe...you know the drill. Anyway, the guidebook description of Pricess Arch lists an approach...

Climbing in the Red has to be good for tourism. We live in Michigan and drive 11 hours to get there. There is a fair bunch of us in the Traverse City area that make the trip, so tell the state park people to get with the program and open up climbing in the parks.
