Re: white rocks

Has anyone given the White Rocks a go, or at least willing to admit it? I have a silly request. I have a few scanned photos taken on climbs there in the 60s. I'm not clear on how the Img utility works. How do I go about attaching photos to a message? So I grew up with slide rules, ok?

Yep. My great-grandparents lived in the notch between Tinker and McAfees. I've been up there many times. The cliffs are maybe 60-80 foot max, good sandstone but awkward. There are big roofs at the bottom of most of them and a lot of wide chimneys that can be climbed solo. We did a little top roping ...

What a remarkable cliff. Great photos. The best part of it is going to be the clean faces on about the upper half. Where we climbed it, the upper face actually lies back a little more than you might think, but the exposure is amazing. I figured this must be 300 feet or so? Our four pitches were rela...

When our scanner gets back up, I'll send you guys some flix. In the meantime, how could I get hold of TradMike's wonderful air photo? Fine place. Maybe if I could expand it I might see some landmarks to shore up my failing memory.

It seems to me to be a travesty to close what would turn out to be the best backcountry climbing in Va. On the other hand, it's been closed all these years while climbing has turned into a big sport. Someone would get to open dozens of new multipitch routes, many of them in today's terms, moderate. ...

That is completely annoying. Are they just being cowardly, or do they have a wildlife excuse or something? It's the biggest rock in Va., well-protected and just beautiful. What a pity. Well, we got our routes in the 60s and thought they were some of the best we ever did. Of course, we didn't bother ...

No. There's a trail that goes straight up from the bottom. The National Monument maps show it.

Good question. I haven't seen the air photo before. I don't remember climbing through any brush or big ledges, so I think our first route was perhaps to the left of the big buttress that generates the shadow on the left side. I'm pretty sure one or two of the later routes went up just to the right o...

White Rocks

The first climb we did there we called B&B, because in those days we thought it required a high balls to brains ratio. Whatever. It was maybe 5.8 with a few little aid moves. It proceeded up the highest part of the wall beginning on a steep right-facing ramp that curved left onto a ledge. Straig...
