I actually girth hitch both ends of the runner. one side of the runner to my belay loop and one side to the 'biner. that should eliminate all possibility of this specific type of accident...

I use a 9.8 with a Gri-Gri, and it works fine. you have a to be a tiny bit more careful on the belay, but overall it works just fine.

I wouldn't go too much lower, though. just as a personal preference.

Bruise Brothers is probably your best bet. at least then you'll be around other bumblies and not somewhere where "real" or "serious" climbers are going to shoot you dirty looks and complain loudly all day.
