Re: Muir Sandbag

That would make much more sense. Thanks for posting - found the original thread. It's still quite the sandbag at 12b if the crux is (presumably) V5/6, but that makes a LOT more sense than 11c. ;-)

Muir Sandbag

Boom-slang at Tectonic Wall is pretty massively sandbagged at 11c. There's a comparable route next to it graded 12b that I onsighted on the same day in good conditions. I was completely unable to do the move on Boom-slang. Tried an all points of dyno, fig4, and drop kneeing above my head - all to av...

Re: Who would volunteer to save the hemlocks?

Clif, it's not abstract politics. All the untreated hemlocks will die. Period. The question is whether it's worth it to us to save the ones we can for our enjoyment and for the benefit of the local ecosystem. So, I spoke with the head of Animal and Plant Health Protection Services in Kentucky about ...

Re: Who would volunteer to save the hemlocks?

If not us then who? Do some searching for nature/conservationist groups and expand beyond the climbing community. Tree hugging is in vogue these days... http://naturepreserves.ky.gov/news/Press%20Releases/NR_SaveKentuckysHemlocks.pdf , https://www.facebook.com/kyhemlocks , http://www.knlt.org/ &quo...

Thanks, Rick. If you need any help with planning (tree selection/evaluation, marking protocols, GIS mapping, databasing, etc.) I'm happy to help.

Re: Who would volunteer to save the hemlocks?

| | Above study discussed here: http://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/study-claims-colony-collapse-disorder-caused-insecticides This seems to be the safest way to administer the insecticide. Seems like most of the insecticide will stay in the tree until it breaks down and not harming anything...

Re: Who would volunteer to save the hemlocks?

Oh geez, guys, it's not a choice between hemlocks and bees. The hemlocks will die. Imidicloprid will save many of them. Whether it's cost effective to treat them every year for the indefinite future is another story. The environmental impacts of imidicloprid use are definitely worthy of concern, but...

Re: Who would volunteer to save the hemlocks?

Pressurized trunk injections would be ideal, but we'd need trained arborists, not volunteers then.
