John O'Leary Haight - Goodbye my friend.
It is with a heavy hand that I write this. On Wednesday, December 7, 2016, John Haight left this world and journeyed on. John, who many knew simply as “Hop,” was an avid climber, cyclist, adventure racer, trail runner, whitewater paddler, and all things outdoors. A naturally gifted athlete, Hop is k...

ROADSIDE IS NOT OPEN - IT IS CLOSED
I was at the Graining Fork Nature Preserve this morning and noticed hoards of climbers descending on Roadside. I asked an older couple if they had permission from John to climb there. "No" they said.nI then asked them if they had asked Grant for permission to climb there. No, again. They t...

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice
The parking area for Roadside is a county park ... it is owned and maintained by Wolfe county. I would think that Wolfe County would be less than enthused with a need for further patrols and oversight at an area on their outermost boundary. Any charge for a "service" comes with a legal re...

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice
One of the amazing things that Never ceases is the talk of impact. Impact to what? there are no known "special" aspects of the base of the climbs at roadside. Because the land changes over time you call it "impact" its pure aesthetics. There is no actual "impact". A ye...

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice
any incidents of climbers up there Saturday? I was there this afternoon and evening putting up signage. Remarkably, the parking lot was pretty empty. There were a couple of parties who were there before we put up the sign, but they left before we were finished. Thanks to everyone for their cooperat...

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice
grant, we know each other so I am clearly not trying to be a jerk....Twinkie has the exact same chain draws. I thought it was a bad idea there too, btw. I never considered that anyone would ever be so bold as to hang chains on such a visible route inside the RRG proper. I suspect the USFS does not ...

Re: ACCESS TO ROADSIDE - closed unttil further notice
Just to be clear, the problems at Roadside are not permadraws. It is greater than that. Roadside is simply a crag in a 80+ acre nature preserve. It has been loved to death by over use. It continues to deteriorate. Want to see Roadside 20 years ago? Stroll over to Andromeda Strain - there are ferns, ...
